The master tiler is not only an expert in laying ceramics or natural stones, but they also prevent problems by using proven working methods. To avoid cracking of grout or tiles, here are some useful tips from your tile master.
UNCOUPLING MEMBRANES

First, uncoupling membranes are designed for laying tiles, to ensure sealing and to prevent cracking and breakage of ceramics. There are commercially available uncoupling membranes specially designed for tiling, commonly known as structural tile laying membranes. In fact, they serve to minimize the movement of the main substrates (laminated plywood or concrete slab) of the new tile (semi-floating type).

If we go back a few years, the majority of master tilers used a direct type of installation with the main substrates. The disadvantages associated with this type of installation (direct installation) were structural. If the laminated plywood or the existing concrete slab underwent mechanical shrinkage or expansion movement, there was a good chance that the movement would be transmitted to the tile and would thus cause cracks in the tiles. This problem does not occur following the installation of new kitchen cabinets.

For example, during exterior ceramic installation, water is likely to seep into the mortar bed. To prevent infiltration, your master tiler will suggest adding a drainage membrane as an effective way to drain water.

In addition to sealing, uncoupling membranes are also used for vapour management (vapour-proof) and heavy load support.

SUGGESTION FROM YOUR MASTER TILER

There are a few manufacturers on the market, but Schluter Systems, which offers various types of uncoupling membranes depending on the location of the installation (kitchen, bay window room, exterior, etc.). These membranes designed by engineers such as Ditra – Ditra XL – Ditra – Heat and Ditra – Heat or TB for concrete slabs represent simple and effective solutions to structural problems.

In conclusion, to protect your investment from cracks or breaks, it is strongly recommended to install this type of membrane before installing the new tile. In addition, they are very popular with savvy consumers and are increasingly used in all new projects.
